The grotto of St. Michael ย is located on a top of mount Gargano in Italy.ย Gargano is in the province of Foggia, in the south of Italy.ย It is near the town of San Giovanni Rotondo, where the Stigmatist St. Padre Pio lived his Priestly life. It is considered the oldest shrine in Western Europe because of the first apparition there of St. Michael. It has been and still is an important pilgrimage site since the Middle Ages.

ย Relic rocks of the grotto are hard to find but we have found one for you. It's up for charity and all offers are accepted. Just contact us!

There are 3 events which connect St. Michael Archangel to the cave

ย

St. Michael Archangel GrottoSt. Michael the Archangel appeared several times to the Bishop of Siponto near a cave. He asked the Bishop to dedicate this cave for Christian worship and promise protection for the town of Siponto from pagan invaders. ะ…t. ย  ะะต ะฐั€ั€ะตะฐrะตd tะพ thะต lะพัะฐl bั–shะพั€, ะฐnd tะพld hั–m hะพw unั–quะต ะฐnd sั€ะตัั–ะฐl thั–s ัะฐvะต wะฐs tะพ hั–m after an event. Later it would be known as St. Michael the Archangelโ€™s cave. This was in the year 490.
During the same year in that same town of Siponto, there was a wealthy man named Garganus.ย He owned a large herd of cattle. A bull that he owned strayed from the cattle to a mouth of St. Michaelโ€™s Cave. The wealthy man was so enraged that he took a poisoned arrow and shot it at the bull, however, in midair the arrow turned around and went straight to him, thus killing him.ย

Mt. St. AngelThe Archbishop of Sipontum upon hearing about this mysterious event ordered the local citizens to do a three day fast. During that time St. Michael the Archangel appeared to him and revealed the significance of that in event: ะ…t. ะœั–ัhะฐะตl thะต ะrัhะฐngะตl ั–ndั–ัะฐtะตd thะฐt hะต hะฐd ัhะพsะตn the cave tะพ bะต ะฐ shrั–nะต ั–n hั–s hะพnะพr. Later, in the year 663 on May 8, during a storm on the eve of a great battle St. Michael the Archangel appeared with a flaming sword on the top of Mount Gargano. A group called the Lumbards of Siponto won victory over the Orthodox Greeks that were loyal to the Byzantine Emperor.

In commemoration of this victory, the church of Sipontum instituted a special feast day honoring the Archangel, to be on May 8.ย  This spread throughoutย  the Catholic Church.ย  Pope Pius V formalized it as Apparitio S. Michaelis where it confirmed the victory but not necessarily commemorating the apparition.

St. MichaelIt seems there was another battle where the town of Siponto and the neighboring town of Beneventan were starting to be besieged by pagan Neopolitans. In desperation, the people of the two towns turned to their bishop for help. ย The bishop said to do a three day fast and to pray for protection from St. Michael. The archangel appeared to this bishop and assured him of their victory. The Neapolitans were defeated.ย  As a sign of his aid in their victory, St. Michael left his footprints in the stone of the cave where Garganus had previously been killed by the arrow. It has been said that the footprints can still be seen there today. The Sipontans, hearing about this were in great doubt and fear as to whether they dare enter the cave.ย ย They went to their bishop about this predicament. Apparently, the bishop wondered if he should consecrate this cave/grotto. Again St. Michael appeared to the bishop and told him that there was no need to consecrate it since he had already done so. St. Michael then instructed the bishop to first enter the chapel/cave and conduct a Mass. When the bishop went in he discovered an altar covered with a red cloth. The bishop then appointed priests and psalm-singers to conduct daily services in the grotto/chapel. It turns out there was clear and sweet water which seeped from the ceiling stone beyond the altar. It was collected in a glass vessel suspended by a silver chain. The water healed all types of infirmities. A hagiographic account of St. Michael's three apparitions on Monte Gargano ends with St. Paul's observation on the function of angels (Hebrews 1:14):ย "Are they not ministering spirits, sent to minister for them who will receive the inheritance of salvation?"
