WHAT IS LENT AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Lent is a season of preparation for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days, not counting Sundays. During Lent, many Christians choose to give up something they enjoy as a way of focusing on God and preparing their hearts for Easter.

Lent is a great time to focus on our relationship with God and what it means to follow Jesus. It's also a good time to take stock of our lives and make any necessary changes. Here are six things you need to know about Lent.

What Is the Meaning of Lent?

The word "Lent" comes from an old English word meaning "spring." Just as springtime is a season of new life, Lent is a season of new beginnings. It's a time when we can focus on changing our lives for the better.

The History of Lent

Lent is an important time for many Christians, offering a period of reflection and penance before Easter Sunday arrives. It lasts 40 days, not including Sundays, beginning on Ash Wednesday and leading up to Easter. Traditionally, individuals take part in activities such as fasting, reading scripture and making charitable donations as they prepare to honor Jesus's resurrection. During this season of renewal and contemplation, it can be a meaningful opportunity to strengthen one's commitment to their faith through personal sacrifice and thoughtful prayer.

Early Christians believed that fasting for a period of 40 days would be the best way to honor the memory of Jesus' death and resurrection. It was seen as a way of showing loyalty to Him and exercising great discipline from within oneself. Fasting is not just about abstaining from food, but also having time for being mindful, prayerful and reflective – essentially deepening one’s personal relationship with God through it. It allows an individual to understand the world they live in more deeply than before, while putting aside certain indulgences such as worldly desires. In addition, fasting presents the opportunity to demonstrate self-control, making it easier to resist temptations in other areas of life.

Why Do Christians Observe Lent?

There are several reasons why Christians observe Lent. First, it's a time to remember Jesus' sacrifice for us. As we give up things we enjoy, we are reminded of how Jesus gave up his life for us. Second, Lent is a time of preparation. Just as farmers prepare their fields for planting in the spring, we use Lent as a time to prepare our hearts for Easter. And finally, observing Lent helps us to grow closer to God. As we deny ourselves things we enjoy, we learn to rely more on God's strength and less on our own desires.

Lent has long been a part of Christian history, with thousands of faithful believers taking the opportunity to pause and remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us. Many consider Lent an important callback to this divine form of self-sacrifice and choose to observe Lent, often through fasting or abstaining from certain activities or substances, as a way to honor God ad show devotion to Him. This period of reflection is seen as an important tool in one's relationship with their faith and can be particularly beneficial when practiced in conjunction with prayer and other acts of spiritual devotion. Ultimately, Lent serves as tangible reminder that our love accountable, making it an ideal time to realign ourselves with God and reconnect deeply with His Word.

How Can We Make the Most of Lent?

As Lent approaches, it can be a great time to reflect on and challenge ourselves to make small changes in our lives. Taking stock of what habits might benefit from being changed or refined can be a powerful exercise. To start this journey, ask yourself what your purpose for Lent would be- what aspect of your life do you want to shift? Are there certain bad habits you'd like to eliminate, or positive practices you'd like to create? Exploring the context surrounding these goals is key in order to assess if they are realistic considerations both now and in the future. Only then can we begin the hard work of carrying out those intended changes.

If you're interested in observing Lent this year, there are a few things you can do to make the most of this special season. First, pray and ask God what you should give up for Lent. He knows what would be best for you, and he will give you guidance if you ask him! Second, find someone else who is also observing Lent and agree to support each other throughout the 40 days. Finally, make sure you have a plan in place for what you'll do with the extra time and money you'll have from giving up something during Lent! You could use it to serve others or simply spend more time focusing on your relationship with God.

Lent is a special season that provides us with an opportunity to grow closer to God and make meaningful changes in our lives. We hope this introduction has helped you understand more about what Lent is and why Christians observe it!
