For Catholics with Depression: Bible Verses that Inspire Healing

Depression is one disease that recognizes no law, no master, no color, creed, and religion. Worse, the path to healing can be a never-ending journey. While the comforting messages from the Bible may not eliminate depression entirely, it can bring about true spiritual, mental, and emotional healing into your life, especially if you are a Catholic.
Positive reinforcement from the Bible can be a rich source for motivation. The inspiring messages from Jesus Christ, the prophets before Him, and most importantly, prophecies inspired by the Holy Spirit can have a very soothing effect in our hearts and minds. There’s nothing to lose when we open the Bible and find our hope from within its pages. If anything, the Bible is, and will always be, the best source for physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual advice.
When we are down, out, and depressed, what does the Bible tell us? Here are essential messages of healing to remember for continuous healing.

1. The Lord will never forsake you. On this journey, you are not alone.

The most important thing you have to bear in mind when dealing with the uncertainties that come with depression is that the Lord above will never forsake. On this long, winding, and difficult journey, He is by your side, constantly assisting you. Recall the story of the footsteps in the sand. When it feels like you are walking on the sand by yourself, never forget that in instances that Jesus is lifting you to safety.
The Book of Deuteronomy says it best:
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. - Deuteronomy 31:8

2. Patience and trust in the Lord’s plans are crucial for healing.

There is never a one-size, fits-all solution to depression, but you can supplement your healing by keeping your patience and trust in the Lord as steadfast as ever. If you feel you are nearing the end of your patience, hold on some more. For healing to happen, you must be unrelentingly patient and trusting.
The Lord will deliver you, but first, remember this:
I waited patiently for the LORD; He turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; He set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in Him. - Psalm 40:1-3

3. The world will always be a difficult place, and there is not much we can do about it…

... Unless we surrender to God’s love entirely. There are many reasons behind the cause of depression, and sometimes, the reason why we suffer from it is because of the people around us. Someone may have broken your heart, betrayed your trust, or misused your understanding. Surrender yourself to the fact that while these are wrong and truly hurtful, they happen because so many people around us choose to follow their whims rather than the commandments of the Father.
In the Book of John, however, Jesus offers these comforting words:
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." - John 16:33

4. The challenges you are facing will turn you into a stronger person.

Depression may be likened to an endless pit of fire. It afflicts both physical, emotional, and spiritual pain, and in most cases, offers no remedy. But like fire, what it roughens up can become a bright, unscratchable rock in the end-- much like diamonds and other precious stones.
That being said, embrace these difficulties as God’s way of molding you into a stronger individual.
“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.” - 1 Peter 4:12-13

5. God’s love for you is unfailing and never-ending.

There is only one constant in this world: God’s love. Amazingly, not even death or taxes can last forever. In God’s love, we are forever renewed, saved, and His love for us grants us everlasting life.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:38-39
And because God’s love for you is never-ending, thank Him daily. Pray to Him with our beautiful crucifixes, or pray to your patron saints whose Holy Cards may be in our catalog.

6. Don’t decline other people who want to help you. God often brings us other people to make us feel His comforting embrace.

No man is an island, and no man can overcome some mental and physical difficulties alone. You need people in your life, and if you know someone who can help, welcome their assistance. These angels on earth may come in the form of your family and friends, or health professionals.
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

7. Have faith in Him.

Finally, the most important attitude you should always have throughout your journey to healing is to never lose faith. Have faith in the Father; remember that He aims to deliver you, not condemn you. It will be hard-- but find your strength in God’s promise.
Here’s a reminder from Isaiah 41:10:
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Depression can be one of the greatest challenges in life. But there are many effective treatments available that can help you manage your depression symptoms. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your treatment plan may include a combination of medication, therapy, and complementary remedies. Make sure to talk with your doctor to figure out the best plan for you. We encourage you to open up God’s Word and read what He has to say about depression and other mental health conditions. You are not alone in this battle; Jesus is right by your side every step of the way.

The Bible is not a cure for depression. The words are meant to encourage and strengthen you mentally. Like a Psychiatrist cannot cure your depression, neither can a pill. They are meant to help you cope with the situation. To maybe find the root of the cause. I don’t know that anyone has come up with a cure. I am not a doctor or claim to know or understand depression in others but; I know what makes me feel better when I don’t want to confront my demons or anxieties. “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Mat. 11:28-30
