6 Christian Prayers to Bless Your House
Share
Holy Water has been used in religious ceremonies for centuries as a symbol of purification and protection. Today, many people still use holy water to bless their homes and families. When praying for protection, some people will sprinkle holy water around the perimeter of their property. Others may keep a bottle of holy water near the front door to bless visitors as they enter. Holy water is also used to make the Sign of the Cross on oneself, or to trace a small cross on the forehead of a child or loved one, as a sign of blessing and protection. Whether you use holy water for yourself or for your loved ones, it is a powerful reminder of God's love and care.
Below you will find six prayers you can say at home, a traditional house blessing prayer, and a simple step-by-step guide to blessing your house with holy water, the way Catholic families have done for generations.
Prayer for protection
Dear God, I come to you today seeking your protection and guidance. I ask that you surround me with your love and power, protecting me from harm and danger. May your blessings be upon my family and loved ones, keeping them safe from all that would do us harm. Help me to trust in your wisdom and strength so that I may face whatever challenges come my way with courage and resilience.I place my life in your hands, Lord, knowing that you are the one true source of strength and protection. Thank you for watching over me and guiding me each day. Amen.
Prayer for family unity
Heavenly Father, we come to you today humbly asking for your guidance and wisdom. Our family has been through so much lately and we are struggling to find unity. Please help us to put our differences aside and come together as one. Grant us the strength to love and forgive one another, so that our family can be a reflection of your light and love. We ask this in your holy name, Amen.
Prayer for financial blessings
Almighty and gracious God, we humbly ask for your blessing. Please provide for our financial needs so that we may live a comfortable life. We know that material things are not the most important, but they can help us to lead a stress-free life. Help us to use our money wisely, and to always remember that it is your blessings that provide for us. We thank you for your generosity, and we ask that you continue to shower us with your gifts. Amen.
Prayer for a safe home
Heavenly Father, we ask for Your protection over our homes. Keep us safe from thieves and vandals. Defend us from natural disasters. Grant us the wisdom to know how to take care of our homes. Fill our homes with Your love, joy, and peace. We praise You and thank You for all the ways You have blessed us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayer for healthy and happy relationships in the home
Heavenly Father, we come to You today asking for Your help in our relationships with those closest to us. We know that we are not perfect, and that we sometimes say and do things that hurt our loved ones. Forgive us for our wrongs, and help us to forgive those who have hurt us. We also ask You to bless our relationships with Your love, joy, peace, patience, and gentleness. Help us to always remember the importance of communication, honesty, and respect. And finally, Father, we ask that You would bring healing to any areas of brokenness in our relationships. Thank you for hearing our prayers. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Prayer to thank God for His blessings in your home
Thank you, LORD, for the blessing of a roof over our heads. Thank you for the sturdy walls that keep us safe from the storm. Thank you for the windows that let in the light and the doors that keep out the cold. Thank you for the warmth of our hearth and the food on our table. Most of all, thank you for the love that we share in this home. Amen.
A traditional prayer to bless a house
For centuries the Church has closed the day with this short prayer from Compline, her night prayer. It asks God to visit the home and drive away every snare of the enemy, which makes it a natural prayer for any house blessing.
Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy: let thy holy Angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace; and let thy blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
How to bless your house: a simple step-by-step guide
There are two ways to bless a Catholic home. A priest can bless your house using the Church's official rite, and your family can also pray a blessing together, as lay people, with holy water and prayer.
1. Ask a priest to bless your home
The Church's Book of Blessings contains an order for the blessing of homes, and any priest (or deacon) can celebrate it. Simply ask at your parish. Many families invite the priest after moving into a new house, during the Easter season, or around the feast of the Epiphany. The priest reads from Scripture, prays over the household and sprinkles the rooms with holy water.
2. Pray a family blessing yourselves
The Catechism teaches that "every baptized person is called to be a 'blessing,' and to bless" (CCC 1669). The US bishops explain that lay people pray certain blessings "in virtue of the universal priesthood" received in Baptism and Confirmation (USCCB, Sacramentals and Blessings). Here is a simple way to do it:
- Prepare. Get holy water from your parish or a bottle you keep at home, light a candle and gather the whole family, ideally at your home altar or prayer corner.
- Begin with the Sign of the Cross and read a short passage of Scripture, such as Luke 10:5 ("Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!'") or Psalm 127 ("Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain").
- Walk from room to room. At each door, sprinkle a little holy water and say: "Peace to this house and to all who live in it." Remember the front door, the bedrooms and the kitchen table.
- Pray together. Say the Our Father, then one of the six prayers above, or the traditional prayer "Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord."
- Close with the Glory Be and the Sign of the Cross. Many families renew this blessing every year.

3. The Epiphany chalk blessing
A beautiful tradition, still alive in Rome and across Europe, is the chalk blessing on the feast of the Epiphany. Using chalk blessed by the priest, the family writes over the main door the first two digits of the year, then C + M + B, then the last two digits. The letters recall the Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) and the Latin prayer Christus mansionem benedicat, "May Christ bless this house."
What a house blessing is, and what it is not
Holy water, blessed salt and the St. Benedict medal are sacramentals. The Catechism explains that they "do not confer the grace of the Holy Spirit in the way that the sacraments do," but prepare us to receive grace and to cooperate with it (CCC 1670). A blessing is not a charm: it is a prayer that places your home and your family under God's care. The Catholic Encyclopedia on holy water traces this practice back to the early Church.
Sacramentals for blessing and protecting your home
Once you have prayed over your house, these sacramentals help keep that blessing close every day. Our holy water and holy salt are blessed by Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter's Square, ship from Rome and come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Many families also hang a St. Benedict crucifix near the front door or above the bed. The medal of St. Benedict, set in the cross, carries an ancient prayer of protection against evil. Learn how to use the Saint Benedict medal, or see our St. Benedict Wall Crucifixes.
